WTR + the unraveling

One of the key elements of all the work I now do is to follow Joanna Macy’s Work that Reconnects (WTR).

My recent discovery of her book, and spending time with one of her lead teachers has inspired me to include this important philosophy in everything that I do.  WTR consists of two main principles:  The great turning and the unraveling.

You don’t have to look far for bad news these days. Our lives are filled with fear based messages. Instead of having negative thoughts about it, I am listening to this bad news as more positive evidence of the great unraveling.

If one looks beyond these news flashes to factual comparisons done by independent third parties, we can see our natural world slowly unraveling:

  • The US forest service now spends over 50% of its budget fighting fires, it used to be 16%.

  • 2014 was the hottest year on record, and 2015 will most likely beat that.

  • Iran recorded its highest ever heat index at 1650F

Need more evidence? Just look at your daily morning low temperatures. They are probably at an all time high. Where I live, the morning low design temp was 55F, now it’s commonly about 70F for a morning low!  Just this week (Sept 7, 2015), the US weather bureau changed their forecast from 7 days of 90F temps to 7 days of 110F within 24 hours – that’s a 20F mistake!  so much for our computer modeling… they can’t even keep up with nature’s unraveling.

Another example is to look at the availability and price of fish. Various fish species are going extinct, or are so few they are not commercially viable1 anymore.

Joanna Macy’s wonderful book ‘Coming back to Life’ is my current must read.  I am in the midst of reading it twice.

‘Coming back to Life’ is also a 1994 song by Pink Floyd (youtube song video)

Pink Floyd – Coming Back To Life Lyrics

Where were you when I was burned and broken
While the days slipped by from my window watching
And where were you when I was hurt and I was helpless
Because the things you say and the things you do surround me

While you were hanging yourself on someone else’s words
Dying to believe in what you heard
I was staring straight into the shining sun
Lost in thought and lost in time

While the seeds of life and the seeds of change were planted
Outside the rain fell dark and slow
While I pondered on this dangerous but irresistible pastime
I took a heavenly ride through our silence

I knew the moment had arrived
For killing the past and coming back to life
I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the waiting had begun
And headed straight into the shining sun

1‘Commercially viable’ what an ugly term that is the poster child for what we are doing. When nature is no longer ‘commerically viable’ we have a crisis. So in other words, when we stop making money off nature because we overdid it – that’s bad. The initial action of destroying rainforests and ecosystems and wildlife is not the issue – it’s whether or not we make money off it.
